Overview

This parish church is not from the first church of Saint-Martin sur Poilhes. The rural parish of Poalerium Villa can be dated to 450 A.D. It is a priest, visibly wealthy, by the name of Othia, who did not hesitate to date his foundation in relation to the years of his own presbyterate. On his own, he built a "basilica" (rural church) in honour of the holy martyrs Vincent, Agnes and Eulalie on the slopes of the old oppidum. Nine centuries later (14th century), the parish church which takes the name of Saint-Martin de Poilhes is mentioned several times in the registers of the Popes of Avignon. But the building, badly damaged in 1821, served as a stone quarry. Today, only part of the nave and some sarcophagi remain from the sanctuary.
