Overview

A first palace was built in 1614 for the Dukes of Savoy. Military hospital during the Revolution, seat of the Prefecture under the First Empire and then new residence of the rulers of the House of Savoy, the Palace was renovated by J.-A Scoffier while P.-E Barberi painted the royal apartments. In 1860, when Nice was annexed to France, Napoleon III received the homage of the people of Nice in front of this building, now the palace of the Prefecture and the Department. Major transformations were undertaken between 1862 and 1908, when it took its final appearance with its colonnades and the paintings of Jules Chéret and Charles Martin Sauvaigo. The Palais, hosted major events; the European summit, in 2000, the signing of the Treaty of Nice, in 2001, or the festivities of the 150th anniversary of the annexation of the county of Nice, in 2010.
