Documentary: KYSELAK was here – Graffiti anno 1825
This year, we're celebrating the bicentennial of a legendary Walking Tour. In August 1825, young Joseph Kyselak left his hometown Vienna. Accompanied by his white dog, he started a journey that led him to the most beautiful spots of today's Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Bavaria.
For three months he hiked the Alps, visiting historic sites and places, climbing various ruins. He left Vienna by stagecoach, then hiked from Styria to Slovenia and Carinthia, north to Salzburg and to Bavaria to Koenigssee and the 'Sea of Stone', then south again and up high in the mountains of Tyrol. He crossed the Alps again in Italy, and began a fantastic tour along the glaciers at 3.000 m.
Kyselak's writings on nature and landscapes, of people and of countless visits to historic sites were published four years later, in 1829. But Kyselak wasn’t famous neither for this book, nor for his ambitious destinations in the mountains:
i·KYSELAK became famous for inscribing his name wherever he could! According to contemporary witnesses, there were hundreds and hundreds of his ‘tags’ – and some of them still exist.
Begun in 2006 as a research project on Kyselak by director Chico Klein and art historian Gabriele Goffriller, we documented his inscriptions that have been preserved over the last two centuries. We had to separate the stories and the notoriety, which followed Kyselak's name through his lifetime, from facts and common sense. We've edited Kyselak's book about his journey, featured several events, hiking tours, excursions and screenings and we made a TV documentary about him. 45' 28.9.2025, ORF2 10:00 and online ORF.ON
