This fine independent, community-run museum occupies part of a former early 19th century woollen mill and has permanent displays about the history of Dollar and its environs, including Granny’s Kitchen, Castle Campbell, Dollar Academy and the Devon Valley Railway, including a working model of Dollar Railway Station and Dollar Mine (1943-1970) .
It has created and shown over 150 temporary exhibitions since it opened in 1988 and current exhibitions are Local Witches and a 25 metre-long Timeline of Dollar History, which takes visitors on a journey from geological times to the present day. There are also displays on Floods in Dollar; The Origin of the Place-name Dollar; Were the Romans in Dollar?; the History of the Dollar Academy Gardens and Dollar Fair in Olden Times.
There is also a selection of objects from Dollar Museum Collection, including artefacts illustrating local industries, such as bleaching, mining for coal and copper, and brick- and tile-making, as well as an exhibition of work by significant local artists such as Adam Robson and Jennifer Campbell and recent donations.
New for 2025: Dollar Water Mills: Dollar has always had an excellent and powerful local water supply. This fascinating exhibition looks at the mills which harnessed this power, including the Dollar Grain Mill in the Mill Green; two woollen mills, one now Castle Campbell Hall; the Rackmill, originally also a grain mill; and Dollarfield bleachworks, two parts of which were waterpowered. A highlight is a fine watercolour by H W 'Grecian' Williams which illustrates how the mill complex on Mill Green looked c1796. The painting has been loaned for the duration of the exhibition by a kind Friend of the Museum
Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor.
