Edinburgh New Town Church, originally St Andrew's Church, was the first church to be built in Edinburgh's New Town. Its unique elliptical shape is dictated by its location between George Street and Thistle Street, a compromise location to James Craig's plan for the church to be sited on the plot of land acquired by Sir Lawrence Dundas on the east side of St Andrew Square (Dundas House).
The Great Disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843 took place here, marking the establishment of the Free Church of Scotland.
