Edinburgh Printmakers is a creative centre for printmaking and the visual arts in the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh. It has a large light-filled printmaking studio running courses and workshops, two galleries, a shop selling original fine art prints and handmade products, venue hire space for meetings, events or learning activities, a café, a courtyard, and community garden. Edinburgh Printmakers was established in 1967 as the first open-access studio in Britain. The studio facilities are open to anyone who would like to take a course or join as a member. In 2019 we moved from our former home on Union Street to Castle Mills, Dundee Street in Fountainbridge – a remarkable heritage building that has been a silk mill, a rubber factory for over 100 years and later a brewery complex until 2007.

2025 Theme - Architectural Heritage: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future
This year’s Doors Open Days theme fits perfectly with the essence of our heritage building Castle Mills, which was fully renovated in 2018 in order to keep its industrial soul while re-adapting the spaces for its new purpose as a printmaking studio and art gallery. All areas within the building look onto the next, with spacious open-plan rooms and lots of windows both external and internal that create visual lines between the different historical periods. Our tours will be formulated to follow these visual lines which also connect spaces that remain faithful to their original industrial Victorian design, and contemporary areas such as the White Cube gallery space, or the bright café with one entire glass wall.
We are also offering a free creative walk around the venue, where we will utilise the architectural features of the building as frames for specific views to draw on site. This walk will focus on how decorative and historical elements have been maintained to dialogue with newer features and frame different views of both interior and exterior sections of the building, spanning centuries within one composition.

We have a sensory map, which is accessible digitally on our website Accessibility Page or as a hard copy at our front entrance. Edinburgh Printmakers partners with WelcoMe app which allows visitors to plan their visit ahead of time and inform the venue indicating the areas they need customer service to have awareness of and the specific assistance required.
