Eigse Lughnasa: 'Beat of The Bodhrán' - Bodhrán Workshop
The native Irish frame drum is a popular traditional music instrument today.. However this wasn't always the case. Many theories exist as to the origins of the bodhran; from ancient farming tool, Celtic shamanic drum, to the poor mans tambourine.
Regardless of its origins, the bodhrán was not played in traditional Irish music until the 1960s. While Sean Ó Riada added the Bodhran to the line up of Ceoltóirí Chualann, elevating its status, it was renowned percussionist Peadar Mercier who took the frame drum to new heights. He introduced the using of a cipín or beater rather than the old hand playing method. The signature style of some modern Bodhran players has pushed this simple frame drum beyond its boundaries.
This free introductory workshop with Noel Carberry is opportunity to try out the Bodhran for yourself. Open to all ages, both non- players and beginners.
Bodhran’s will be provided courtesy of Longford Music Generation.
