Desde el siglo XVI hasta mediados del siglo XX, en la época del deshielo (mayenco), los nabateros descendían el río Cinca en nabatas, embarcaciones de troncos realizadas para transportar la madera de los bosques de montaña hasta la desembocadura del Ebro. En 1983 los jóvenes de la zona se interesaron por recuperar el oficio y formaron la Asociación de Nabateros de Sobrarbe con el objetivo de conservar y dar a conocer la historia y el trabajo de los nabateros. Desde entonces, cada mayo se realiza el Descenso de Nabatas por el río Cinca entre los pueblos de Laspuña y Aínsa, convirtiéndose en una de las celebraciones insigne del Pirineo Aragonés. También participaron en la creación del Museo de la madera y el Ecomuseo de las nabatas en Laspuña y la Ruta de los nabateros en Puértolas. En 2022 fue inscrita en la Lista Representativa del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad de UNESCO dentro de la candidatura “Timber Rafting/La Maderada/Cultura del Transporte Fluvial de la Madera.
