Ellen Hutchins Archives Cabinet and Display: Bantry Library

Bantry Library, Co. Cork County
Show on the map
24 August 2025
Overview

See a new selection of Ellen Hutchins archives in the beautiful oak Archives Cabinet when it returns to the reference section of Bantry Library during the Ellen Hutchins Festival in Heritage Week 2024. Beside the cabinet is a small table top display of materials relating to Ellen’s life, botany and botanical art.

Earlier this year, one of Ellen’s botany books was found and it is on show for the first time. Also on display in the cabinet are letters written by Ellen to her brothers about her botany.

Admire one of Ellen’s drawings of seaweed, made in 1811 and three of her seaweed specimens on loan from the Herbarium of Trinity College Dublin. Ellen took great care when laying out and pressing the specimens and the results of this can be seen over two hundred years later in these beautiful examples of seaweeds she collected and pressed from Bantry Bay.

Saturday 17th August and Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th August, 9:30am to 5:30pm - (closed Sunday and Monday).

Two free events - Ellen Hutchins at Ballylickey: Archives in the Afternoon at Manning’s in Ballylickey on Monday 19th and the Launch of ‘Holdfast’ by Annette Skade on Friday 23rd 6pm to 7:30pm in the library both give opportunities to see a further selection of archives relating to Ellen Hutchins.

The Archives Cabinet and display are part of the Ellen Hutchins Festival taking place 17th-25th August - full details of all the events here: https://ellenhutchins.com/event-listings-2/
