Show on the map
19 August 2025
Overview

Ellen (1785-1815) botanist and botanical artist, lived almost all of her short life in Ballylickey and this is where she made her specimens, drawings and wrote her letters. Come to Ballylickey, to the lovely Manning’s Emporium, for an opportunity to find out more about Ellen from her great-great-grandniece, Madeline Hutchins, and treat yourselves to an excellent afternoon snack of your own choice. An informal drop-in event, with information to browse, archives on display and your questions answered.

See a selection of Ellen’ letters to her brothers about botany and books that she owned on a range of subjects from botany to poetry. Some books have the remains of pressed plants between their pages. Also on display will be botany illustrations and books of the period that we know that Ellen used.

A free drop-in event - buy your own food and drinks.

The Ellen Hutchins Festival is taking place 17th-25th August - full details of all the events here: https://ellenhutchins.com/event-listings-2/

The Ellen Hutchins Archives Cabinet is in Bantry Library during the Ellen Hutchins Festival with a selection of archives including one of her drawings and there is a small table top display of material related to Ellen, with photographs of some of her drawings and specimens. See separate event listing. (Library closed Sunday and Monday.)
