Overview

The church of Saint-Hilaire, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, is located in the canton of Mèze, in Mèze. This building, characteristic of the Languedoc Gothic style, underwent many modifications after its reconstruction. It was widely modified in the middle of the fifteenth century at the instigation of Étienne de Cambrai, bishop of Agde. The church consists of a single nave divided into four vaulted bays of brick ribs. The apse, narrower and lower, has a seven-sided vault. The entire structure is reinforced by buttresses. The bell tower, square in shape, rises to the north of the last bay of the nave. Adjacent to the city’s fortifications, this tower tower has often been used as a defensive tower during periods of turmoil in the city. The two chapels that border the last bay of the nave were built at the same time as the reconstruction of the church.
