Overview

The Library(Bookcase) of study and of preservation of Besançon keeps(preserves) one of the richest French collections of books handwritten and printed. She is the heiress of an old(former) tradition: its foundation goes back up(raises) to the abbot Jean-Baptiste Boisot who, in 1694, leaves of his(her) whole library(bookcase) to the Benedictines, provided that collections are available of the public, under the control of the City of Besançon. The Library(Bookcase) settles down in the abbey Saint Vincent (street Mégevand). It will be after installed(settled) Revolution street Saint-Maurice (currently street of the Library(Bookcase)) in a new building(ship) built by the City of Besançon between 1808 and 1839: it is the first building(ship) built in France to be a public library(bookcase). This building also welcomes the local Archives, which keep(preserve) documents produced by the City from 1290 to our days. The site "Random access memory" presents online collections digitally converted by archives, by library(bookcase) and by museums, for the curious of art, of history(story) of the city or of genealogy.
