Overview

The Order of the Friendly Brothers of St Patrick is a fraternal and benevolent society formed in Galway in the early eighteenth century to stamp out the practice of honour duelling. Some prominent members included Arthur Guinness, the Duke of Leinster, Lord Edward Fitzgerald and Cornelius Grogan. Both Fitzgerald and Grogan are notable for taking part in the 1798 rebellion.

The Order, which has an extensive collection of records dating from 1750, is exhibiting a selection of its archive materials in a free Heritage Week event at the Stearne Room, Marsh's Library, Dublin, 8
