Exhibition of drawings by Mathilde Demanet
Mathilde Demanet (1846-1914) was a painter who was too little known despite her great talent. Trained by the great names in painting in Brussels, nothing destined an unrecognised girl for a great artistic career. Recently honoured as part of an exhibition on the Cercle des Femmes Peintres at the Musée Rops in Namur (13/04/24 - 08/09/2024), the Commune of Saint-Gilles is undertaking the restoration and enhancement of the collection of drawings by Mathilde Demanet and her husband, the painter Léopold Speekaert. Saint-Gilles Town Hall has built up a magnificent art collection over the course of its 120-year history. As a haven for artists, the commune has received a number of gifts and bequests from the studios and personal collections of painters and sculptors, which now adorn the walls and rooms of the Hôtel de Ville. Léopold Speekaert bequeathed the paintings and drawings of the two spouses to the commune of Saint-Gilles. On the occasion of the Heritage Days, the drawings and paintings currently being restored will be presented at the Hôtel de Ville, with a view to an exhibition on the work and collaboration of the two artists in the years to come.
