Fergal O'Gara, Patron of the Annals of the Four Masters
The Annals of the Four Masters, also known as the Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland, is one of the most significant and comprehensive historical records of medieval and early modern Ireland. Compiled between 1632 and 1636, these annals were the work of a group of historians led by Brother Mícheál Ó Cléirigh, a Franciscan friar. The project was patronised by Fergal O'Gara, an Irish nobleman and the lord of Moygara in County Sligo. The Annals of the Four Masters remains a crucial source for historians and scholars studying Irish history. Its detailed accounts of events, personalities, and places provide invaluable insights into Ireland's past, thanks to the collaborative effort of the dedicated Franciscans and the patronage of Fergal O'Gara.
The talk will be given by Nollaig Ó Muraíle who is a prominent Irish scholar, historian, and academic known for his work in the field of Irish studies, particularly in genealogy and the study of Irish manuscripts. He has made significant contributions to the preservation and understanding of Irish history and culture.
