Overview

Le Gouffre is a civil building dating from the Gallo-Roman era and covered by a 16th century building. It consists of a cavity dug into the rock, 7 meters deep. This is surmounted by a rectangular shelter. Access to the water is via an 18th-century staircase. The Gouffre reservoir is supplied with water by a natural aqueduct, carved out of the rock (529 m). It conducts seepage water from the Beauce Plateau from the northwest of the city. The water from the Gouffre has long fed the fountains of the city. Today, only one is still there: the Saint-Jacques fountain, rue Denis Papin. In 1511, the food was no longer properly. Work was started with the patronage of Louis XII. The master fountain maker Pierre de Valence is responsible for installing this exceptional hydraulic network. The old lead pipes are replaced by terracotta pipes. Informations Accidental access
