Overview

The Romanesque abbey church, today a parish church. Only the west facade, the nave and the north aisle remain, which date from the last quarter of the 12th century. In contrast to the major buildings built in Brittany at the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century, which display a strong mural animation and a desire to structure the space (such as at the abbey church of Sainte Croix de Quimperlé or in the choir of Saint-Gildas de Rhuys), the Abbey Church of Daoulas presents a deliberate archaistic austerity approach, recalling the first Romanesque constructions in Brittany, such as the Notre-Dame de Locmaria (Quimper). This desire for simplicity is well in the spirit of the times, which sees the rise of orders with strict rules, including the order of Saint Augustine who holds the abbey.
