From Ornament to Empowerment, uncovering the Women who shaped Art Deco
Immerse yourself in the world of Art Deco through the eyes of women active in this artistic movement. During this talk, Elisabeth Gérard will guide you through the history of female decorators, designers, architects and craftswomen who are still relatively unknown today. Women in the Art Deco movement were often not only artists, but also active in the fight for women’s rights. We invite you to discover these forgotten stories, which are nonetheless essential for understanding the architecture and decoration of the Belgian interwar period. An architect who graduated from ULB in 2022, Elisabeth Gérard dedicated her Master’s thesis to the first women architects trained at La Cambre (Brussels, 1927-1950), and her research focuses on the history of architecture through the prism of gender studies. She works as an architect in Brussels, is a scientific collaborator with the Hortence Laboratory at La Cambre-Horta ULB and is in charge of the Female Heritage Department within the non-profit organisation L’Architecture qui Dégenre. The lecture will be given in French. In collaboration with L’Architecture qui Dégenre and Complexe Albert Hall.
