Galway Workhouse archive Collections
Mountbellew collection in focus.
Galway County Council Archives holds material for 8 of the 10 Poor Law Unions established in the county in the 19th century. Archivist Patria McWalter will provide an overview on the functions of the Unions, and on the collections held in the archives, which are a rich resource for those interested in administrative, social, medical, and local historians.
Attendees will have an opportunity to view some original minutes from the Mountbellew collections, dating from 1850-1856.
The Mountbellew minutes from 1857-1921 are currently being digitised, a project receiving funding under the Heritage Stewardship Fund 2024.
Places are limited so booking is essential. Enquire at archivist@galwaycoco.ie
