Garlogie is the site of a 1799 wool spinning mill which contains the oldest steam engine in Scotland still in its original location. The engine dates from the 1830’s but incorporates an 1805 Boulton and Watt cast iron beam. A 1923 72kW hydroelectric power station is also to be seen. The surviving mill buildings are Category A listed. You will be able to see around the beam engine, turbine and mill site.
Guides from the Garlogie Beam Engine Trust will be on hand to explain the operation of the equipment and the mill’s plans for the future. An exhibition in the Garlogie Village Hall will explain the history of the site and significance of the Leuchar Burn in providing energy to Garlogie Mill over several centuries of industrial activity.
Access to the beam engine is via a short flight of steps. Other locations are wheelchair accessible. There is a pleasant walk alongside the Leuchar Burn on a paved track which would be suitable for children, dogs and wheelchairs. There is ample parking at the site.
Over the event weekend teas and light refreshments will be served.
