Għajn Qajjet: Reliving our Water Heritage
The event will be centered around the common European theme of sustainable heritage. During the weekend, an archaeological excavation will be conducted in a rock-cut water shaft located inside the Ghajn Centre, possibly dating to the medieval period, if not older, which was specifically intended to extract water from the water table through an ingenious system of vertical shafts and horizontal galleries. Also during the event, an exhibition of cultural material found inside a tomb in close proximity to the site in 2021 will be set up and the human remains found inside the tomb will be analyzed during the event. Talks on the topic of ancient and historic water harvesting techniques will be held at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:00 on both days. On Saturday our guest speaker at 10:00 will be Dr Keith Buhagiar, Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta, who will give a talk on 'Malta and Water: the pre-Knights period water gallery systems'. Our guest speaker on Sunday at 10:00 will be Mr Steven Mallia who has just published a book on the history of water conservation in Malta and will give a presentation on the same subject. Puppet shows and archaeology excavation pits will be set up for the younger visitors and genuine archaeological pottery vessels will also be on site and members of the public will be permitted to handle these artefacts.
