Discover how we care for thousands of objects currently in storage - from art and natural history to technology - and learn about the vital work that goes into preserving Glasgow’s incredible museum collections. Small groups will be guided round some of our storage “pods”, glimpsing objects such as butterflies, tigers, mummies or paintings, to name but a few. Our tours are designed to be family-friendly, but we don’t advise that they are suitable for under 5s. The venue is a working conservation and storage facility, and the content of the tours is more engaging for 5 and over. Our venue can only be accessed by pre-booking one of our tours. Overview: Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC) is the store for the museums' collections when they are not on display at our venues. It is a vast building with rooms full of fantastic objects, from animals to armour, fine art to fossils, and much, much more. The main collections stored here are Art and Paintings, Arms and Armour, Natural History, Technology and World Cultures. The 17 purpose-built and environmentally controlled storage ‘pods’ house around 1.4 million objects. In fact, only 2% of our collections are on display at any one time and the majority of the remaining objects are stored here. Water bottles can be filled up at our drinking water cooler. Free lockers are available, and all bags and outdoor coats/jackets must be left there before taking a tour. We have wheelchairs available for visitors who would like to borrow one for their visit. We have folding stools available to take on the tour.
