From wider pavements and improved lighting to accessible transport and nearby childcare, feminist urbanism challenges traditional planning to prioritise safety, accessibility, and inclusion for all genders and ages. As the UK’s first official Feminist City, Glasgow is embedding gender equality into its planning vision. Hear how Councillor Holly Bruce and others are driving change to create more caring, equitable, and people-centred spaces. Holly Bruce Biography Councillor Holly Bruce is a University of Aberdeen law graduate who was elected in 2022 as a Glasgow councillor for the Langside ward. As one of the youngest women to serve with Glasgow City Council, Holly is Vice-Chair of the Council’s Environment and Liveable Neighbourhoods Committee. Holly is a feminist activist, who played a key part in the 2021 Young Women Lead research report – Glasgow: A Feminist City? She passed her Feminist City motion in October 2022, committing the Council to embed a feminist town planning approach into its city development plan. Holly is passionate about ensuring culture and sport are accessible to people who are often excluded. She is particularly interested in helping remove barriers for women, non-binary and trans people participating in sport.
