Overview

The house of Louis Pasteur in Arbois is an absolutely unique heritage site, still inhabited by the presence of the scientist. Preserved as it is, the house remains as Louis Pasteur knew it: it immerses the visitor in the living and working environment of the scholar. Listed as a historical monument, the house of Louis Pasteur d'Arbois received in 2011 the label "Houses of the Illustrious" from the Ministry of Culture, at the same time as the birthplace of Dole. Pasteur returned throughout his life to this house in Arbois, the only one he owned. From his father’s modest tannery, where he spent his childhood, there are few things left, because Louis Pasteur transformed this house into his "Château de la Cuisance", and arranged it to his liking. In this house where he returned every year, Pasteur combined the useful with the pleasant: surrounded by his family and friends in the living room or in the dining room, he could devote himself to his research in his private laboratory. It was in Arbois that he conducted his work on fermentations and it is there that he developed the famous pasteurization. Thanks to the experiments conducted in his vineyard of Montigny-les-Arsures, he was able to definitively challenge the belief in the spontaneous generation of microorganisms. From billiards to the bedroom, find the scientist in the privacy of this incredibly preserved house. Discover its personal laboratory, preserved intact and still inhabited by the soul of its illustrious owner and by the effervescence of his Jura experiences.
