Overview
Old Cemetery of La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin (Loiret): between funerary heritage and local memory
An original visit, open to all, where emotion, historical discovery and anecdotes mix in a place full of memory.
Starting from one of the oldest tombs (1817), the Alternative Funéraire, the Local History Group and the City of La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin invite you to an original journey that combines discovery of funerary heritage and diving into more than two centuries of local history.
The wars: You will notably discover the graves of Indian soldiers from the First World War, testimony to the diversity of the combatants. The Second World War will be evoked through prominent destinies of the Resistance: the midwife Marguerite, who put his life in danger to help Jewish women hidden in the Loiret to give birth illegally; Aurélien Hatton, resistant; or still Henri Beaudenuit, deported to Buchenwald. The visit will also be an opportunity to rediscover the painter Eugène Prévost-Messemin and the works of his daughter, the artist Madeleine Prévost-Gili. Without omitting to mention Miss Lolive, Miss de Beuvry and Mr. Chemin, as well as Louis Ripault, which will allow us to better understand the link between Paris and La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin in the 19th century. Many other local figures will also enrich this journey of memory.
