Overview

Fort Ducrot is one of the fourteen fortifications (eleven in Alsace, three in Baden) built around Strasbourg by order of the Prussian general Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke after the fall of the city in 1870\\. These fortifications follow the concept developed by Hans Alexis von Biehler, whose goal was to form a discontinuous enclosure around the stronghold made of artillery forts spaced with a range of guns. It is a unique place where you will travel between Prussian times and the Maginot line. In 1870, following the fall of the Second Empire and the defeat of Napoleon III at Sedan, Alsace and part of Lorraine were annexed by the Prussian Empire. Strasbourg and its surroundings were profoundly modified by the construction of a belt of forts around Strasbourg. Built between 1879 and 1882, Fort Ducrot/Podbielski is the last and smallest of the belt of the forts of Strasbourg.
