Overview

The Volvestre Intercommunal Tourist Office houses two museums that are accessible to visitors: the Lapidary Museum and the Papogay Museum. The Lapidary Museum is dedicated to the remains found in the village of Rieux-Volvestre. The lapidary museum houses stones and capitals of the cloisters of the Franciscans and Dominicans. The Franciscans settled in Rieux-Volvestre in 1272; the Dominicans in 1275\\. Of these two sets there remains only the old building of dormitories and kitchens of the sixteenth-eighteenth centuries on the site of the current Jacobins park. During the French Revolution, the convents of Rieux-Volvestre, partially abandoned, were sold as building materials, which is why there are many cut stones integrated in the walls of houses of the village.
