Overview

Founded in 1835 by the Avranches Archaeological Society and ceded a few years later to the city, the Avranches Museum of Art and History is one of the oldest museums in Western France. Its status is that of former "municipal museum controlled", today benefiting from the label "Musée de France". In the course of its history, the museum has seen its collections disappear twice. In 1899, the fire of the Tribunal, installed in the episcopal palace where the Archaeological Society presents its collections, reduced to ashes more than 60 years of efforts. A new museum was then set up in the former convent of the Capuchins, in the Jardin des Plantes; but, in 1944, the battles of the Liberation destroyed the buildings and collections it contained. After the war, the town of Avranches acquired the walls of the old prison, formerly the official palace of the bishopric, and appointed a curator, Michel Delalonde, who set about rebuilding the museum.
