Overview

The central cemetery of Mulhouse houses the graves of many personalities who contributed to the industrial development of the city. Mulhouse’s economic development began in 1746 with the production of Indian women in the first craft factories. In the 18th century, the impetus of the great family dynasties enabled Mulhouse to establish a solid reputation as an industrial city. The history of Mulhouse is closely linked to that of its cemeteries, which house many remarkable graves. Following a local initiative, the central cemetery, built in 1874 by architect Jean-Baptiste Schacre, was classified as a protected area (ZPPAUP), which became a Remarkable Heritage Site in 2016\\. The Association Mémoire Mulhousienne, in partnership with the City of Mulhouse, has been working since 1994, with the help of volunteers, to safeguard and enhance the funeral heritage.
