Guided tour of the Bell Tower
It is the most important building of the monastery, the one to which the monks bring the most care because they carry out their mission: to pray God for the salvation of souls. Most of the elements of the west facade date from the reconstruction decided by Abbé Amaury in the 12th century. On the left, about two meters high, we notice an old opening, now blocked: the «papal door». This door opened on the aisle destroyed after the fall of the bell tower in 1739; a staircase now disappeared no doubt allowed access. As its name suggests, it was reserved for the supreme pontiff: four times in the history of the abbey, the supreme pontiff entered the church through this door, four times it was walled. Sainte-Élisabeth chapel built in the 15th century.
