Overview

La Chartreuse de Vauclaire – 690 years of history in motion 🕰️🏛️

Located in the heart of the Dordogne, the Chartreuse de Vauclaire has passed through centuries and upheavals.

Founded in the fourteenth century by chartreux monks, it has an eventful life: Hundred Years' War, Wars of Religion, French Revolution, and even a requisition by the American army in 1915 to install a military hospital. Richly rebuilt in the seventeenth century, embellished in the nineteenth and emptied of its property after the law of 1905, it is reborn again: in 1919, Vauclaire becomes a psychiatric hospital , function that it still assumes today. From monastic life to the care of souls, from silent chapels to hospital corridors, this place full of history fascinates as much as it moves. ✨ Come and discover a living memory told by Françoise Bournet, president of the Group of Study and Memory of Montponnais, and let yourself be carried by the 690 years of twists and turns of a monument like no other.
