Overview
⛪ Visit of the chapel – A witness to history
This Romanesque chapel, rebuilt in 1104 on the remains of a Carolingian church partially destroyed in 865, is a true history book.
Its architecture consists of three naves, two absidioles and an apse, following a plan reminiscent of Antiquity: square pillars, absence of columns and sculptures, rectangular doors. The facade retains some granite stones from the 11th century, while the rest (copy of the bell tower-facade) dates from 1842. The crenellated keep was added in 1870. This church had a turbulent past:- Proximity of the cave of Sabart (spot of counterfeiters around 1200).
- Used as a prison in 1345.
- Burned in 1568.
- Haven for brigands until 1624. She found peace only in 1876, when she became the seminary of the diocese. Even today, history continues to write itself: the fervor that surrounds September 8, during the pilgrimage of Notre-Dame, remains lively. Visitors can admire a 14th century wooden statue of the Virgin as well as fragments of stained glass windows from the 13th century.
