Overview

The Sansan Palaeosite is a 3 km trail with educational signs. Following in the footsteps of Edouard Lartet along the Paleontological Trail, you will learn how this modest lawyer discovered in 1834 a leading paleontological deposit that revolutionized the scientific theories in force and brought to light the fauna and flora of a distant time, the middle Miocene (-16.5 to -14 million years). The Sansan Palaeosite is the property of the National Museum of Natural History of Paris. Opened to visitors in 2018 by the Val de Gers Community of Communes, the paleontological trail was designed with the support of scientists from the MNHN of Paris and Toulouse. Excavations at the site are currently halted.
