Overview

Sitting in the middle of the countryside, between fields and woods, the castle of Cadouzan is an old stronghold whose first written trace dates from 1280; composed of the castle, a walled enclosure of towers, moats and ditches which served to protect the south bank of the Vilaine, natural border of the barony of La Roche Bernard. Between Viking invasions, crusades, the war of succession of the duchy and the attachment of Brittany to France, the history of Cadouzan is rich. From the first castle, and even from the second, there remain only the foundations, the interior walls and the stones re-employed; and it is in the sixteenth century that Cadouzan finds the physiognomy that we know him, since he is completely rebuilt, with in its center an imposing granite staircase, atypical in Brittany at that time, and almost oversized.
