Overview

🏰 Discovering the castle of Massaguel

The name of Massaguel first appears in 1152. Its castle, today partially preserved, still presents the traces of a rich and complex architectural history.

The castle seems to have been surrounded by two enclosures. From the first, there remains a partly levelled tower with a height of 12 meters. The entrance door of the inner courtyard, open in this enclosure, consists of a semicircular arch, surmounted by pilasters from the 17th century. In the axis of this portal stands the main facade, square-shaped, flanked by three round towers still visible, although leveled, rising more than 18 meters. The current facade is pierced with 18th century windows, which replaced the old mullioned windows. The second level, however, retains two Renaissance-style windows. Finally, a long corridor runs through the castle from one end to the other, testifying to the internal organization of this remarkable building. 🎟️ A heritage to discover in the Tarn, between medieval history and successive reworkings.
