⛪ Understanding a baroque altarpiece – Guided tour

Baroque art, initiated in Italy around 1580-1600, spread throughout Europe and its territories, with local adaptations. Total art combining architecture, painting, sculpture, silverware, embroidery and singing, it reflects the era of the Catholic Counter-Reformation in reaction to the Protestant Reformation. In the Pyrenees, it allows lines of artisans to become true artists. In Bigorre, Baroque reaches its peak between 1660 and 1760. Building an altarpiece is then a collective adventure for the communities. Theatrical, symbolic, rich in popular cults, it offers a universe of wonders and glances.

🎤 History of baroque art – Thibaut de Rouvray

Art historian, associate researcher at the General Inventory (Occitanie Region, Department of Hautes-Pyrénées), he offers you some keys to understand this style in its last period of creation, based on the altarpieces of Artigues and Sère.

🔨 Demonstrations and restoration – Cécile Cabanac and Pascale Wittendal

Cécile Cabanac, restorer, will comment on the renovation of the celebrants' seats and will carry out a demonstration of traditional polychromy on wood and foil gilding. It will also present the profession of art object restorer, its types of interventions and its ethics. Pascale Wittendal, craftsman-painter, will explain the cleaning work of part of the painted vault, the rehabilitation of the entrance door and the decoration of the altar still in use. 👉 An exciting encounter between history, art and traditional know-how.
