Overview

History: The project to create a reservoir in the Hérault valley was born in the 1950s; The initial objective was to ensure a function of capping the floods of the Hérault, after a succession of several violent and devastating floods. The other objective assigned to the dam was that of irrigation, because at the time they were looking for an intensification of agricultural production, as well as ways of diversification (turning the vineyard into market gardening and arboriculture). The dam was finally built from 1964 to 1968, by decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, and under project management of the Department. The dam was pumped and filled from 1969 to 1971\\. The project drowned the old road from Clermont l'Hérault to Lodève, necessity of the expropriations of some farms present and that of the inhabitants of the village of Celles. He was finally spared by the rising waters and gradually regained life. The structure is imposing: 357 in length, 62.30 m. high above its foundation,
