Overview

Built in the early 19th century, the lime kilns of La Veurière ('Ste Anne' kiln) were operated for a hundred years, until the eve of the first world war. The monumental ensemble was fully restored after its protection as a historical monument in 1980. The vast building extends over more than 150 meters in length and rises up to 15 meters above the ground. It includes 3 large ovens 12 meters high and with a diameter of more than 5 meters. The built massif is made of granite and red schist. It is powerfully surrounded by numerous buttresses and half-ridged bays that give it the silhouette of a medieval fortress. The guided tour includes the complete discovery of the building and its annex buildings, working apts, cottages, main house restored with the label of the Heritage Foundation, access ramp to the upper terrace and limestone-marble quarry. A video report completes the presentation of the chaufournière activity. Possibility of free visit of the chapel St-Joseph, ovens St Pierre (registered ISMH in 2006) distant from 800m by the hiking trail along the 3 large quarries now flooded (pretty bodies of water). Informations 5€ per adult, free for those under 12 years old
