Hay Fever
Hay Meadow Crafts with artist and ecologist Monica Fleming
Join us in New Ross library for some Hay Fever crafts as we celebrate Heritage Week 2024.
Wexford County Council will host artist and ecologist Monica Fleming on Tuesday 20th August to celebrate our hay meadows and traditional crafts with an adult crafting event.
Traditional crafts using hay and straw are in danger of being lost, along with many of our meadows. This event will explore the art of making Hay Headgear – Headbands and Hats from hay/grass and decorated with natural materials. These craft pieces are made using traditional Irish techniques that were common in hay meadows in the past. Grass and meadow wildflowers are coiled and plaited with a simple tool, the Súgán twister. Participants can take away what they make.
Monica will also speak about our disappearing meadows and how they are such a valuable habitat for wildflowers and an important food source for our pollinators.
Booking essential as spaces are limited.
