As we celebrate Heritage Week at the National Museum of Ireland in County Mayo, be sure to join in one of our free guided tours, taking place at 2pm and 3pm on Saturday, 17 August 2024. Journey back in time and marvel at the innovation and endurance of our rural ancestors through the Irish Folklife Collection. To compliment our Traditional Basketmaking Demonstration taking place on the same day, these guided tours will focus on the art and craft of basketmaking and how common Irish plants were used to create these beautiful and functional objects. Hear how bramble and heather plants were incorporated into basketmaking and the significance of using local materials. This tour also explores the interesting history of the Fitzgerald family and the architectural style of Turlough Park House and Gardens. Tours start at 2pm and 3pm on Saturday, 17 August, at reception in the main museum galleries. Each tour will be announced in advance. No booking required. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
