Overview

Welcome to Vieil Ecotay, site of medieval origin located on a rocky outcrop overlooking a gorge landscape, at the confluence of two rivers, the Cotayet and the Bouchat (or Chavarant). This site was formerly composed of a castle with keep, walls, chapel and village perched on terraces. Although it was far from the roads of communication, along with the castles of Monsupt, Lavieu, Essertines and Châtelneuf, it belonged to a line of defense on the side of the Auvergne protecting the access to Montbrison, which became the capital of the county of Forez in 1173\\. The castle Built by the counts of Forez (late 12th - early 13th century?), its guard passed in 1262 to Guillaume d'Ecotay then to the families of Lavieu- Feugerolles and Talaru-Chalmazel, allies of the count of Forez.
