Overview

Not far from the bustle of Rue Neuve and Boulevard Adolphe Max, the Art Deco frontage of the l’Espérance tavern really catches the eye on this quiet, unassuming street. It is said to have been created by architect Léon Govaerts, who designed the Vanderborght stores on Rue du Fossé aux Loups and the home of banker Van Buuren in Uccle. The building was constructed in 1930, with its rather austere lines. The ground floor was clad with veined marble. The slightly off-centre entrance was topped by a metal canopy from which a vertical illuminated sign emanates. This sign breaks the continuity of the transom bays, whose geometric stained-glass windows add a touch of colour to the overall effect. Inside, you can still feel the original atmosphere of a café from this era, especially as all the decoration has been preserved, from the door tambour to the panelling, from the wrought iron to the painted stained-glass windows, and from the herringbone parquet flooring to the marble-clad elements. One of the hotel’s twelve upstairs rooms has preserved its original Art Deco decor. Many regulars and tourists come to enjoy this unique atmosphere, which is already appreciated by a loyal clientele.
