Overview

Behind a rather austere Art Deco facade, the Hotel Wielemans boasts a cheerful, colourful decor made from almost 5,000 ceramic tiles. Shipped in from Spain, these tiles were used to recreate the atmosphere of the Andalusian patios so dear to Léon Wielemans, the client, and his wife, for whom the house was built by architect Adrien Blomme. Also in the Art Deco spirit, the interior features a series of rooms, most of which open onto an elegant covered patio whose polychrome ornamentation is beautifully enhanced by remarkable ironwork and woodwork. In 2019, the tower and Hotel Wielemans were acquired by the German fund PATRIZIA, which launched The Louise, a 30,000 m² office and services development. As a prestigious asset, the house was transformed into an exclusive venue for meetings and dinners, with access to the garden. Well maintained but in need of a full restoration, it was entrusted to Carmen Azevedo, an architect and urban planner specialised in heritage at ARCHICAZ. The azulejos, guardillas and other tiras verdes were cleaned and repaired, as were the glass and lead light fixtures, wallpaper, woodwork and parquet floors. The aluminium foil paintwork was redone, as was the fish-scale rendering on the facades and the garden, with its pebbled paving and ponds. The Hotel Wielemans is a fine example of Art Deco coupled with Hispanic and Moorish influences. (CL22/09/1994) In collaboration with Arkadia. Photographs are permitted, but only with smartphones.
