Overview

Erected in 1933-1934 on the edge of Woluwe Park, the Maison Gombert stands out from the buildings lining Avenue de Tervueren. Its cubic appearance, facade with marked geometric accents, flat roof and white rendering ensure it occupies a significant place in Brussels’ modernist movement. The architect responsible for this beautiful building is Huib Hoste. A well-known exponent of the modernist movement, he helped design the garden cities of Zelzaete and Kappeleveld, as well as other homes such as that still visible at number 14 Avenue Saint-Jean, also in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre. His stay in the Netherlands allowed him to immerse himself in the theories of the Amsterdam School and the De Stijl movement, which he reflected in his work. For the Maison Gombert, Huib Hoste also took care of the interior fittings, creating a variety of furnishings, some of which still survive today.
