Overview

This remarkable Art Deco bourgeois house was built for a Portuguese merchant, Mr Homem de Macédo. It has kept its name ever since. Architect Émile Vanlerberghe was in charge of the project, which was completed in 1927. The date and the signature of the owner appear on the ground floor, which was clad in white stone. On the upper floors, white Silesian bricks were combined with white and light-blue stone and glazed bricks, a colour also found on the imposing cornice. The facade features a central bow window topped by a loggia with a balcony decorated with stylised floral motifs. The house has retained a splendid glass door with a wrought-iron gate featuring a gushing fountain. A butterfly serves as a doorbell. The interior perfectly illustrates the volumetry typical of the period and the decoration, a refined Art Deco style reflected in the fireplaces, stained glass windows, radiator covers, locks, doors, hardware, wood panelling and choice of marble.
