Overview

Active until the early 1920s in the firm of Diongre, Van huffel et Bodson, architect Lucien François was also a good friend of Antoine Pompe, another architect who left his mark on the Brussels landscape. From 1919, he worked in Mondello, a seaside resort in Sicily, where he built several villas reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie houses. This same inspiration would guide him in this modernist building he designed in 1927. He used concrete and other innovative materials for the time, demonstrating his taste for avant-garde architecture. In this case, it is a double dwelling characterised by marked symmetry, brickwork, corner windows and wide cantilevered awnings. Lucien François, who also drew inspiration from Bauhaus and the international movement, produced a body of work that reflected his interest in light and clean, rational and functional construction, of which this building is a fine example.
