House Tenaerts, Avenue Coghen 59
Some credit him with more than 200 buildings in Brussels, others with nearly 1,500! Louis Tenaerts is best known for his complexes, which shaped the look of districts across various municipalities in the Brussels Region. In Rue des Augustines in Jette alone, there are 17 houses in the Art Deco style, featuring alcoves, projections, stained-glass windows and a combination of white brick and stone, and 15 more houses can be found on Rue Jean Vanhaelen in Auderghem! He also designed several detached villas in Square du Castel Fleuri in Watermael-Boitsfort. This house is one of the first prototypes developed by Tenaerts’ company C.I.B. in 1936. It contains some interesting details but is overall less striking than many of his other projects, as it was originally designed as a building with two separate flats. In 2018, the house was completely renovated by the architectural firm MSA, which transformed it into a single-family home. The old tiled roof was demolished and replaced with a new extension inspired by Tenaerts’ style. A new side balcony was added on the second floor and the rounded turret was extended. The renovation was intended to be discreet, subtle and respectful of Tenaerts’ work. Saturday and Sunday at 10.00 am (FR), 12.00 pm (FR), 2.00 pm (EN), 4.00 pm (FR) (duration 45min, maximum 15 people per departure)
