Overview

Puerto de Sagunto arose as a result of the seaport located on the east coast of Spain that bears his name, in the Valencian Community. Its origin dates back to Roman times, when it was used as a commercial port for the transport of minerals and other products. However, the modern development of the port and its industrial activity are mainly due to the expansion of the steel industry in the region. In the mid-nineteenth century, the first blast furnaces were established in Sagunto, which marked the beginning of industrial activity in the area. In 1902, the Compañía Minera de Sierra Menera was founded, which was responsible for exploiting and transporting minerals from the Sierra Menera region to Puerto de Sagunto. This company played a crucial role in the development of the port and the city, as it promoted the construction of railway and port infrastructures to facilitate the transport of minerals. The steel industry experienced significant growth in the twentieth century, and the Port of Sagunto played a vital role as an export point for steel products and other industrial materials. For decades, the steel industry was the main source of employment and economic activity in the region. However, as the twentieth century progressed, the steel industry faced economic challenges and changes in the global market, which affected the activity of the port and the local economy. In recent decades, Puerto de Sagunto has sought to diversify its industrial and commercial activities to adapt to changes in the economic landscape. Although the steel industry still has a presence in the area, it has undergone changes and adaptations to maintain its economic relevance in a constantly evolving industrial environment. The old Warehouse of Effects and Spare Parts, built in 1927 by the Company Siderúrgica del Mediterráneo to store matrices and spare parts. This building was saved from demolition, after the closure of Altos Hornos del Mediterráneo in 1984, with the purpose of creating a museum that would tell the origin and development of the factory city of Puerto de Sagunto. After the rehabilitation last year, we find a large cultural container that will allow us to know many of the key pieces and documents of the industrial history of Puerto de Sagunto, as well as the labor movement. Therefore, it is interesting to value the roots and local heritage, to strengthen the values of the place and thus, indirectly, achieve settlement of the population and employment growth. The creation of activities for families with the common theme of knowing the heritage and industrial history of Puerto de Sagunto are part of this proposal. A large participatory model will be made devising an industrial city. Each participant will visit the future Industrial Museum where they will be welcomed with a brief introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals and how we approach to meet them in our day-to-day actions. After understanding the importance of recycling and the new uses of buildings and also of the materials used daily, the (individual) work to be done by each participant will be presented. Pieces of scrap wood from nearby carpentry km 0, cardboard and wood parts of proximity laser cutting industry, pipes of different sizes and diameters for domestic use (WC, kitchen...), coffee can and capsule sheets (according to the ages of participants), cork stoppers, coloured papers and recycled acetates from technical office, glue… Therefore, each visitor will have countless pieces of geometrics, textures and different sizes to freely compose an industrial landscape: chimneys with cardboard tubes, buildings inspired by mechanical parts, large blocks of housing of working families as well as free spaces with games and vegetation will be the personal design of each one. A model of about 30x30 cm base for each participant. Finally, the individual models will be placed next to each other to form a large participatory industrial city among all the participants. The future of industrial Puerto de Sagunto in the imagination of future generations. The didactic team that carries out the activity has been approaching culture, art, architecture and heritage to the youngest population for more than 15 years with activities where creativity is enhanced and the imagination, sense of observation and artistic abilities of the participants are developed. These activities help them to acquire knowledge about our cultural traditions by discovering their talents and developing greater self-confidence and abilities. The didactic team makes part of the International Network of Heritage Education promoted by the Ministry of Culture (RIEP-INHE), and are local agents of the European Heritage Days (JEP) created by the Council of Europe. All our workshops are in agreement with the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically numbers 4-Quality education, 10-Reduction of inequalities, 11- Sustainable cities and communities and 12-Responsible production and consumption.
