Overview

To coincide with National Heritage Week, Roscrea Heritage Society is delighted to host an Introduction to Natural Materials & Basket Weaving by Lynn Kirkham. Lynn is a highly skilled Master Basket maker, Multi-media Artist and Sculptor with many of her sculptures becoming popular landmark pieces. Lynn has produced a number of large-scale public artworks in bog oak, bronze and steel, including the spectacular Ghost Horses in Co Kildare, and Bó Bainne, the five life-sized Friesians commissioned by Teagasc in Fermoy, Co Cork.

As one of the first contemporary basket makers in Ireland, Lynn is well-known for her woven artworks. Through talks, classes and events, she helped provoke an entire movement in the creative use of willow and other sustainable natural materials.

During our event, Lynn will talk you through the use of natural materials such as willow, how it is grown, when it is harvested and what this natural material can be used for. She will have some various sized pieces to showcase on the day and will encourage all those attending to try their hand at making a small piece such as a headband, wreath or coaster to take home.

This event will take place in the stunning setting of the Black Mills. The Black Mills dates from the first half of the 18th century and is located near the 11th century Round Tower and the 12th century Romanesque church.

This event has received funding from Tipperary Heritage Office
