To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Turlough Hill, Ireland’s only pumped storage hydro station, ESB are delighted to host a ‘Junior Hydro Engineer’ guided tour of Turlough Hill.

As Ireland’s leading energy company with operations spanning electricity generation, transmission, and distribution ESB has been providing Connections, Routes, and Networks across Ireland for almost 100 years.

ESB is driven to make a difference by enabling a sustainable energy future powered by clean electricity. The pumped storage station at Turlough Hill in County Wicklow captures and stores surplus energy generated by wind and solar power, helping us make the most of our renewable resources. At the time of completion in 1974, Turlough Hill was the largest civil engineering project ever undertaken in Ireland.

During the 150-minute tour our intake of ‘Junior Hydro Engineers’ will enjoy a guided tour of the massive underground cavern deep within the mountain which is home to four turbines that generate a combined 292 megawatts of clean energy. In addition to learning how clean energy is generated they will visit the Hydro Control Centre, and Turlough Hill exhibition to gain a fascinating insight into the construction of Turlough Hill and its role in ESB’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy.

Tours are suitable for children from 8-12 years. A parent or guardian will need to stay with their child for the duration of the tour. Please note the upper reservoir is not included in the tour itinerary.

Some things to know before you book the JUNIOR Hydro Engineer tour of Turlough Hill
• Turlough Hill is a working power station and on rare occasions we may need to delay or cancel our guided tours at short notice. We will notify you should this occur.
• Visitors should observe the signage in place and always follow the instruction of their guide and station staff.
• Unfortunately, the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or persons with limited mobility as the emergency exit is via a steep flight of stairs.
• During your visit you will be required to wear Personal Protection Equipment (Hi-vis jacket; safety hat; safety glasses), these will be provided.
• A visit to the Upper Reservoir is NOT part of the tour itinerary.
• Tours are suitable for children from 8-12 years. A parent or guardian will need to stay with their child for the duration of the tour.
